hot blood red metric shoes
i was looking forward to seeing metric in a smaller venue - not least due to the fact that they are fronted by the hotter then hot miss emily haines. after some dramas and blagging with security we got in and after some more blagging i managed to get access to the stage for shooting - for the whole night!

we were pleasantly surprised to find that blood red shoes were supporting, one of the loveliest and most down right talented bands knocking around the uk at the moment.

with a reverse white stripes formation, blood red shoes put out a hell of a sound and put on a hell of a show for only two rather small individual's.

and metric did not disappoint either. having access to the stage was a treat and allowed me to get my quota of "emily metric shots".

they delivered both older material and their latests to a transfixed audience and the set was completed by a stage diving emily haines.

here is the rest of the metric set and of course the blood red shoes set.

dial #1 for WORLD DOMINATION
well if you thought that the last lot of big news was big, then this next instalment of big news is positively enormous. i have been approached by the ever so talented photographer/designer/musician simone merli to appear in another exhibition - IN MILAN. i know simone through flickr and am a massive fan of his shots, so i am very flattered that he has asked me to be in the show.

the show is titled 3x8 - 3 scatti, 8 giovani fotografi musicali which i am told mean "3 photographs, by 8 young music photographers". it may be lost in translation a little but i think that the "young" refers to the amount of time we have been shooting gigs, not my ripe old age.

simone has managed to get some space in a small indie club, ortosonico, just outside of milan. the show is running for a month from 18th of november to 15th of december. we will not be able to head to italy due to our trip to oz, but simone is hoping to have another show in the beginning of next year which we will be able to get to.

the three shots above will be my contribution to the show, and i was still keeping with the young english band theme, and also a little bit of a different kind of shot from your normal band photo. i am still having a little trouble getting my head around what is happening - am just really chuffed to have some more work on display. i will put more details up as i get them.
simone has created a website with details for the show and he has also been kind enough to use my photo for the flyer.

good lights + static singer =
equals boring performance but excellent photos. and that was the case for the dears gig at koko.

there was nothing particularly bad about the dears performance - only that it wasn't that much of a performance - more like the CD being replayed.

the lighting was spot on at koko, and i am quite chuffed with how the shots turned out. so not all was lost.

the rest of the dears set is on flickr.

and the winner is....
HACKNEY!
wow, what an honour and privilege. there was some strong competition from our neighbouring borrow, but hackney has risen to the challenge and claimed the top spot. hackney is officially the "worst place to live in the uk".
the report on 24dash.com

a big thanks to all the cracker heads, hoodies, chavs, gangsters, winos, bums, and nutters who have made this dream possible.

in raptures
so that is a rubbish title. but it does go some way to conveying how much i am in love with the rapture and what an absolute joy it was to shoot them.

i have had their new album (pieces of the people we love) on very high rotation, stating my love for them daily to anyone that would listen. so you can understand how much i was looking forward to this gig.

the lads started off a little slowly, and i was wondering if the show was going to live up to my high expectations. all these fears were dispelled but the middle of the second track.

their set included a nice mix of tracks from the new album as well as the "classics" from echoes and loads of the almost trademark cowbell. i have never seen koko erupt like it did when they played house of jealous lovers. scenes of rapturous pandemonium - sorry....

the rest of the rapture set can be found on flickr.

my biggest gig yet!
ok, the title is a little deceiving. it was my biggest gig - my biggest photography gig that is. the astoria can hold about 1600 people so was a little different to the 100 people capacity clubs i normally shoot at.
the line up was pretty stella, a collection of some of the hottest "the" bands knocking around the uk at the moment - the horrors/the maccabees/the dykeenies/the fratellis.

first up was nu-goth kids, the horrors, and my biggest gig didn't get off to well. trying to convey the whole gothic feel, the band decided to play the first song in the dark! and considering that i only had the first 3 songs to shoot and i couldn't use any flash it wasn't looking too promising.

the lights did come on for the next two songs and the horrors put on a pretty good show. sounding a lot like nirvana in the early bleach days.
the dykeenies up next and i am not sure what they are doing on the tour. very under whelming.

the band that i think should have been headlining the tour, the maccabees, produced another stomping set. they put on a top performance and their tunes are so damn catchy.

i was suprised to find out that my photopass didn't allow me to shoot the headline band, the fratellis. this turned out to be a bit of a blessing in disguise as the fratellis were rubbish. not idea why they are so popular.
as always you can head to my flickr stream to see the rest of the shots from the night, and my biggest gig yet!

chase buch

i took some promo shots for a mate, fatih, who is a world dominating dj and music producer under the guise of chase buch.

both me and fatih were extremely happy with how the shots turned out. i was fearing a lot of grey dull east london shots. but they are quite the opposite.

you can find the rest of chase buch's set here.
