volcano! @ the luminaire
i got 2 results from the night when i really think about it.
the lesser was this it was my first time to The Luminaire and what a wicked little venue it is. just been refurbished, top sound, good set up that allows for uber easy viewing... and there is not security guard to be seen (so i can snap away to my hearts content).
the main result that i got was seeing volcano! (yes you need the lower case 'v' and the exclamation mark) perform live what i think is going to be one of the best albums of the year, beautiful seizure.
their music is described as being a drummer who plays out of time, loud and soft. a guy on samples making all sorts of crazy sounds. and a singer who sings 'fafafafa' while playing guitar. now while this does all sounds a little mish mashed, it all fits together perfectly to produce a really full, but eclectic sound.
sam scranton the drummer is amazing. not only is he a spot on drummer but he uses all sorts of bizarre items to make sounds - ranging from children's toys, pots and pans, nuts and even a bike bell.

nearly a libertine
while pete 'i love the sun newspaper' doherty cannot seem to stay out of the news for all the wrong reasons the other front man from the truly amazing libertines - carl barat - has been getting on with business of making music. and it is damn fine music at that.
i am still gutted that i never got a chance to see the libertines in their shambolic heights, but the show that carl's new band (dirty pretty things) put on last night at the forum at least gave me an indication of what could have been.
the show was absolute rock n roll, with DPT belting out their new tracks along with some libertine's classics thrown in. 'i get along' brought the place down.
amazing gig - will see if Carlos and the boys can continue - but i think that there is nothing that will be able to replace pete at his best...

the gossip

i have banged on about this band quite a lot after seeing them at the laneway festival in sydney...
but oh my - again i have been totally blow away by them. they played at the elbow rooms last night in islington which is a strange venue. it is actually quite large, but the stage area is rather small and has a wicked intimate feel.
beth and the rest of the gossip absolutely turned it on. she is the one of the best lead singers i have ever seen.

i will say it again - see this band - if you don't - well kill yourself ;) well at least check their myspace

may day may day
may day long weekend has come and gone, and much rock was had.
on monday night artrocker put on a stella night at the garage in london - line up was packed full of the current darlings of english art rock. after a slow start (there was a delay as some hoodie had broken in during the day and sprayed the entire place with a fire extinguisher) we managed to catch a number of bands that we had heard nothing but good things about.
angular arty rocky best served in the form of the pistolas, elle milano and the every brilliant lady fuzz
